MARTEL MAXWELL: Dundee to London flights failed because they were too expensive
Last Friday marked the end of what was the greatest revolving door of transport connections in Dundee as the final Loganair commercial flight landed.
There was Dundee to London City, Stansted, Heathrow, Orkney, Shetland, Amsterdam and Belfast – each eventually canned.
You just have to read the comments section of The Courier’s news story on the final flight to see the wide array of theories and head-scratching as to why we could not sustain our own airport.
I once regularly used the service to London when it flew to City. An online search states the Stansted route came first, but unless my memory serves me incorrectly, 20-plus years ago, London City was the destination and it was brilliant.
It was a bit more expensive than Edinburgh but not ridiculously so – and that cost was worth the ease: no drive to Edinburgh, no pricey parking costs or queues for security.
You boarded a cute flight, got a cup of tea and shortbread or Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer and boom, there you were, almost in the middle of London.
Then came Stansted, which has a cheek to call itself a London airport – like landing in Longforgan for a meeting in Glasgow – and there was Heathrow.
Fares rose to........
