Domestic abuse survivor who was shot raises concerns over prison early release scheme
A survivor of domestic abuse who was shot by her partner has spoken out about proposed changes to the early prisoner release scheme.
Rachel Williams, from Malpas in Newport, was targeted by her abusive partner Darren Williams in a 2011 attack that left her with life-changing injuries.
She voiced her concerns following recent changes to the Government’s early release scheme, which still allows some domestic abuse offenders to be released before serving their full sentence.

The scheme, aimed at easing severe prison overcrowding, has excluded around 1,000 prisoners from early release.
However, those convicted of domestic abuse-related crimes—including stalking, coercive control, and non-fatal strangulation—are not among those currently exempt.
Ms Williams said: "As both a domestic abuse survivor and an advocate, I have serious concerns about any early release scheme that could see perpetrators of domestic abuse leave prison before serving their full sentence.
