SF government office called 'hell on earth' to get huge housing overhaul

The long-running saga of San Francisco’s sole DMV has reached a pivotal moment. On Thursday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that a developer has been chosen to move forward with plans for an affordable housing project on the lot at 1377 Fell St., which has been the home of the widely disparaged government office with a 2.9 rating on Yelp — one poster called it “always hell on earth” in a one-star review just last month — for over 60 years. A new, up-to-code DMV office is also part of the plan.

This isn’t the first attempt to repurpose the lot for housing. The site was awarded to a private developer for an affordable housing project in 2008, but construction was halted for undisclosed reasons, KTVU-TV reported.

Over a decade later in 2021, the state approved a plan to replace the DMV field office on the site,........
