Davis Fire burns toward 2 Tahoe ski resorts as winds accelerate
Davis Fire Sept. 10, 2024.
The Davis Fire has grown to 5,596 acres, as of Tuesday, and maps show its most active front is burning toward two Tahoe ski areas.
The Davis Fire is actively burning along its southwestern flank, said Jason Clawson, operations section chief with the Southwest Area Incident Management Team 1, in a video update that was posted on Tuesday morning. The fire is heading up a steep incline that leads to two peaks, Mount Rose and Slide Mountain, and is burning in the vicinity of Mount Rose Highway. The fire has zero containment.
As of Tuesday morning, crews have kept the fire below and east of Mount Rose Highway, but maps show the fire is burning in the direction of two longstanding Tahoe ski areas: Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe and Sky Tavern. Mt. Rose is a 1,200-acre ski resort that opened in 1964, while Sky Tavern is a nonprofit ski hill where tens of thousands of children from Reno have learned how to ski since 1948. In the summertime, Sky Tavern is a hub for mountain biking, with a sizeable network of trails that loop across the mountain.
