COMMENTARY: Response to letter about IRAC and P.E.I. Buddhist organizations

I’d like to respond to Ian Dowbiggin’s piece of July 16 last entitled Has history passed IRAC by? He argues that IRAC, in the face of foreign interference, has not been transparent, accountable or responsible and has failed to safeguard the interests of Islanders.

He suggests that this foreign interference directly involves the Buddhist community in Eastern P.E.I. Unlike  other groups suspected of violating our land use regulations, the Buddhists also stand accused of fronting for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), money laundering and other criminal activity. Certainly serious accusations!

He cites as evidence an “eye-popping” book entitled Canada Under Siege, and describes several presentations which were part of the ongoing independent commission reviewing IRAC’s functions and responsibilities. This commission was established once it was discovered an earlier investigation of the Buddhist community had not been, as promised, completed.

These authors and researchers describe how the CCP, using a process called “elite capture,” have co-opted and compromised Island business........
