Strategic leadership of CDF in a changing world order
The multidimensional personality and leadership style of Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of Pakistan, have remained under discussion for the past two years.
Recently, however, this debate has gained international recognition following an assessment by the Financial Times, which openly lauded his strategic acumen. In a notable column, the British daily awarded Field Marshal Asim Munir the “First Prize” among Middle Powers for effectively adapting to former US President Donald Trump’s unconventional and transactional approach to global affairs. This acknowledgment underscores Pakistan’s renewed relevance in an increasingly fluid and unpredictable international system.
In the prevailing geopolitical environment, where traditional alliances are in flux and rigid blocs are losing significance, Pakistan’s CDF has made optimal use of the strategic space available to the country. Under his leadership, Pakistan has successfully cultivated constructive relations with key global and regional players, notably the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. Managing balanced ties with states that often hold divergent or even opposing ideological positions is no small achievement. Yet, Field Marshal Asim Munir’s strategic vision has enabled Pakistan to pursue a pragmatic and interest-based foreign policy that ensures access and relevance in Washington, Beijing, Riyadh, and Tehran........
