LEONARD GREENE: Recognition of Negro Leaguers cheated out of playing in MLB is long overdue
The flawed argument against properly recognizing the achievements of great Negro League baseball players like Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige is that they didn’t compete against the best of the best.
Well, neither did Babe Ruth.
While Ruth was clouting home runs, and Ty Cobb was collecting hits, and Dizzy Dean was blazing fastballs, many of baseball’s best players were languishing in a league where only the ball was white.
For more than a century, America has accepted without much debate that the white record setters and hall of famers were the best at their craft.
But many of them played in a league that kept Black players out of the ballpark.
If any achievements are suspect, it is theirs.
