Harry Siegel: Do NYPD car chases make NYC more safe or less?

The NYPD’s car chase numbers, which started shooting up last year on the watch of new Chief of Patrol John Chell, seem like one more thing in New York City that’s out of control now.

The 598 pursuits the department logged this January, February and March, the latest months covered in newly released data, are way up from 304 over the same months last year — and nearly double the 345 that cops logged in the last four years of the de Blasio administration.

That’s going zero to 100 real quick, from not even a couple of chases in an average week to more than six a day.

The department says, much as it once did about its stop-and-frisk numbers, that some of the increase is a paper phenomenon because “we have better reporting now” without really explaining what that means.

Chell, for his part, has said that “we are not letting you walk away… breaking the law, guns, shootings, gang members, robberies with these cars and bikes — we are not having it anymore. It’s over.“
