Members of Unite the Right UK, an anti-immigration protest group, faced heckling counter-protestors and police officers after marching from the Eagle pub in Newmarket Road.

The group was heard using offensive remarks and seen waving Union Jack flags while holding banners that said 'say no to left-wing propaganda'.

The 50-strong group, led by co-founder Steve Dand, had appointed extra supervision for the rally, as more than 200 members were expected.

They met at the pub at midday, less than an hour before 27,000 fans were due to watch the Norwich City versus Ipswich Town kick off.

James and Jill Linder, managers of the Eagle, were forced to open the site later than usual to protect their staff's safety.

Mr Dand said: "I don't even know why the pub has a problem.

"There's probably more to worry about regarding the football fans.

"I tried to reassure the owners that I would have stewards there on the day."
