People living in City Road say they had been warning the route was a “death trap” as it has become a cut-through for drivers wanting to avoid heavy traffic along the ring road and Bracondale.

The man, who has not been named, was hit by a silver Nissan Qashqai opposite St Mark’s Church at 3.45pm on Friday and later died in hospital.

Witnesses described seeing piles of clothes lying on the blood-stained road as paramedics assessed the man’s injuries.
