Explained: Why IWCC called cinematographer Pratik Shah’s apology a ‘PR strategy, not remorse’

The Indian Women Cinematographers’ Collective has strongly criticised cinematographer Pratik Shah’s apology over sexual abuse allegations, calling it a “calculated PR strategy” and not a genuine expression of remorse.

New Delhi: Cinematographer Pratik Shah issued an apology over the multiple allegations of sexual abuse against him, and just a day later, a collective group of female cinematographers in the country slammed his apology and said it is “nothing more than a cynical PR strategy”. In a long, detailed statement, the Indian Women Cinematographers’ Collective (IWCC) urged the industry not to recognise this statement as “a plea for forgiveness” but as a job application.

“It took twelve months of silence, the loss of a high-profile Sourav Ganguly biopic, and being removed from YRF’s Akka for cinematographer Pratik Shah to finally speak up. But let us be clear about what he just posted. This is not an apology. It is a planned attempt to control the damage, and a desperate effort to get back his professional career, presented as if it is a moral awakening,” they said in a long post on Instagram.
