Explained: Why trouble for Canadian PM Trudeau has increased as his Fin Min quits

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suffered a major setback before the elections in Canada as his Finance Minister and Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland resigned from her post. She also attacked Trudeau and called his plans a political ploy. According to Reuters, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland unexpectedly resigned on Monday due to policy conflicts with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. She is said to be unhappy with Trudeau’s plans to increase expenditure and also cited Trudeau’s declining popularity as the reason behind this.

It may be noted that Freeland was long considered Trudeau’s most powerful minister. Freeland wrote, ‘For the past few weeks, you and I have found ourselves disagreeing about the best path forward for Canada. After much consideration, I have concluded that the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the cabinet.’ She also added the incoming administration in the US has also talked about implementing aggressive economic nationalism. It has threatened to impose a 25 per cent tariff on Canada. This should be taken very seriously.

Freeland’s resignation letter show disagreements with Trudeau over recent economic measures, including a proposed sales tax holiday and direct payments to Canadian citizens. She argued that Canada should avoid “costly political maneuvering” in the wake of potential tariffs from US President-elect Donald Trump.
