Explained: Why Donald Trump needs to stop threatening BRICS and other countries
The US President-elect Donald Trump has been very busy since he won the Presidential race after the November 5 elections, first in handpicking his men for his cabinet and then issuing threats across the globe on issues like currency, trade and war.
Trump has now warned the BRICS countries that if they adopt any other currency instead of the US dollar, then 100 per cent tariff will be imposed on them. Along with the warning, Trump has sought commitment from the nine-member group, which includes India, Russia, China and Brazil.
It may be noted that the United States is not a part of this grouping which was formed in 2009. It is the only major international group which has countries like Brazil, Russia, India, China, Iran, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, sans the USA. It may be noted that since the past several years some member countries of BRICS, especially Russia and China, have been looking for an alternative to the US dollar and want to create their own BRICS currency. However, India has not been a part of this move of Russia and China so far. A proposal in this regard was put forward by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
