Does Justin Trudeau's resignation mark the end of liberalism, rise of right-wing in West?
Justin Trudeau on Monday officially announced his resignation as Canada’s Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party. With this the era of Trudeau ended after being at the top of Canadian politics for nearly a decade. Growing discontent within the party and a rapid decline in public support forced Trudeau to resign. Trudeau will, however, be serving as the caretaker Prime Minister till a new leader is elected in Canada.
One thing that has come to focus with Trudeau’s resignation is that at present the West is seeing a systematic rise of the right-wing ideology. Trudeau’s exit is also seen as a sign of the weakening of liberalism in Western countries and the rise of right-wing parties in countries like the US, France, the UK and Germany. A cursory look at the current political situation across Europe shows that a variety of far-right parties, raising the flag of nationalism, and ultra-conservative nationalism have risen their head in recent years.
Additionally, the fact cannot be denied that in recent years, right-wing ideologies have strengthened their hold on global politics. This is evident from Donald Trump’s popularity in the US, Marine Le Pen’s influence in France, Britain’s Brexit, and the rise of the AfD party in Germany, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland and the Netherlands, Finland, Greece, Austria, etc, this trend shows that voters are now leaning towards populism, anti-immigration, and nationalist policies.
