Opinion | Reasons Behind DMK’s Impeachment Move Against Justice Swaminathan

On December 21, despite the Thiruparankundaram Hill issue being sub-judice, the DMK went a step further in defying the Constitution and, in a show of dare, allowed Muslims to hoist a flag atop the hill with police protection. A few days earlier, the same police were used to prevent Hindus from lighting a lamp on the hill despite court sanction, citing a law and order issue—clear evidence of its anti-Hindu bigotry.

Editorials, op-eds, and columns in major newspapers should serve a purpose, namely, the betterment of society by clarifying controversies or explaining a point of view. To that end, they need to be logical, fact-based, and cogent. However, most newspapers are guided by the celebrity status of an individual or the position that he holds in an organisation in accepting articles for print, most often without proper vetting. The result is often a partisan view, sans logic or facts, that often misleads the public. In effect, they become lopsided portals of cancel culture.

The article, “Dear Editor, I Disagree: Holding judges accountable strengthens democracy" (I.E. Dec 18, 2025) by Mr Salem Dharanidharan, a DMK spokesman, is a classic example of this malady that afflicts our mainstream news media. It is a composition of half-truths, skewed logic, and deliberate misinterpretation that creates a jaundiced narrative to defraud public opinion in the attempt to impeach Justice Swaminathan.

Charging Justice Swaminathan with partisan judgements, Mr Dharanidharan claims, “In cases involving the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department, Justice Swaminathan made observations undermining its framework.
