UK ministers instructed the country’s internal intelligence Body, MI5, to focus on Russia, China, and Iran, and not terrorists as was reported in several outlets (here). The directive suggests that terrorists will not be attacking the UK, despite being resurgent in 2024 and attacking Russia’s Crocus Mall, Iran, and Chinese citizens in Pakistan in attacks killing hundreds of civilians. Why is the UK letting down guards on terrorists and training guns on countries targeted by extremists? Is it coordinating with terrorists? This paper explores the preceding questions using past trends and motives that could be guiding London.

Information appearing in different publications on June 1st and 2nd, 2024 (here and here) revealed that MI5 was directed to focus its espionage on Russia, China, and Iran than terrorists. This announcement may mean that the UK views the countries mentioned as presenting a threat, but shifting its existing resources from terrorists means that the terror threat either never existed or has reduced. The latter arguments are easy to refute using the recent deadly attacks on Russia, China, and Iran. Russia faced a terror attack on the Crocus Hall, which the western media readily attributed to the Islamic States (ISIS*) on March 22, 2024. The attack left over 144, and 550 dead and injured respectively (here). Similarly, Iran experienced a deadly terrorist attack in January 2024 near the burial site of Qasem Soleimani, which killed over 80 civilians.
