Terry Newman: Universities need to wake up to the reality of the anti-Israel campus movement

These aren't spontaneous protests, they're well-organized, well-funded groups intent on undermining Israel's western support

Recently, both the Université du Québec à Montréal and McGill University requested injunctions to remove pro-Palestinian encampments from their campuses. McGill was likely thrust into action, perturbed by students blocking a lawn that was needed for convocation ceremonies. But it wasn’t until protesters showed up at the private home of one of its administrators that McGill’s president, Deep Saini, decided the encampment “isn’t a peaceful protest,” and had to be stopped.

University administrators need to start planning for after the encampments are removed and the new school year begins, because whether they realize it or not, this movement is much larger and better organized than they initially understood — and it’s far from over.

Since October 7, universities have been rampant with open antisemitism. This has likely been exacerbated by a hesitancy on the part of administrations to clearly enforce codes of conduct, especially early on.

There are many distasteful acts that, whether we like it or not, fall under academic freedom. While technically freedom of speech (as vile as it is), a protester at McGill’s Roddick Gates held a sign saying, “On Oct. 7th, Israel killed its own people & covered it up to justify genocide.” Nearby hangs a sign that reads, “Intifada until victory,” and it would not be unusual to see these signs emblazoned with the........
