London is relentlessly criticised – but this city was right on Brexit and right on Susan Hall
I’ve known Sadiq Khan for a long time. Unlike Susan Hall – his intolerant, blinkered and spiteful Tory adversary – he is sharp, free thinking, bold and inclusive. The right threw everything at him – nasty slurs, fake information, religious hatred – but liberal, culturally open, pro-European, pro-migrant, very woke London voted Khan back in with a huge majority.
A Tory insider, quoted in i, attributed Hall’s massive defeat to demographics: “The median age in London is 35 while around 35 per cent [of Londoners] were not born in the UK.”
Fact: white, black, brown, Londoners of all ages voted for this mayor.
Those who hate Khan – and us – will not give up easily. I read this on X today in a post since deleted: “We couldn’t vote him out, the only way to get rid now is physical. He needs to be attacked. His address is public with a Google search, we need to cause him serious pain.” Such threats stalk Khan everyday. But still he rises.
His win, incidentally, has nothing to do with Keir Starmer.........
