Kate Winslet’s latest comments about whether her own children are the benefactors of Hollywood nepotism have caused plenty of conversation online.

The Oscar winner is currently promoting her new Netflix movie Goodbye June, which marks her directorial debut.

Goodbye June features Kate alongside an all-star cast that includes Dame Helen Mirren, Toni Collette, Timothy Spall and Andrea Riseborough, and was co-written by the Titanic star’s son, who goes by Joe Anders, in his screenwriting debut.

During a recent interview with BBC News, Kate was asked about the ongoing conversations around so-called “nepo babies”, a term popularised by New York magazine in 2022 as part of a wide-ranging piece about the new generation of A-listers whose parents are already established figures in the entertainment industry.

I don’t like the ‘nepo baby’ term. I mean I just try and say to my children, ‘just follow your heart’,” Kate insisted.

“There are lots and lots of people in the world whose children go into similar family business[es], whether it’s being a judge or a lawyer or a doctor [so] it doesn’t surprise me at all that my children wanted to do something creative with their lives.”

She went on to say that this encouragement “doesn’t necessarily translate to being able to actually get jobs and actually gain respect from your peers and people around you”.

Kate also went on to say that both her son and daughter – Mia Threapleton, with whom she appeared alongside in the Bafta-winning I Am Ruth – have “separately carved their own paths”.
