Since the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) ruling that the state of Israel must prevent acts of genocide in Gaza, there has been a lot of discussion of what constitutes a genocide. The term was first coined by Raphael Lemkin in 1943, a Jewish Polish lawyer, to describe the then ongoing efforts by Nazi Germany to exterminate the Jews. It would lead to the establishment of the Genocide Convention, the first human rights treaty adopted by the United Nations on December 9, 1948.
