IN AMERICA: The evolution of the ‘List’

“Hey Pete, I was thinking that grilling some burgers would be fun this evening. Maybe with some salt potatoes? Oh, and I left you a note on the kitchen counter. Read it when you can.”

It’s 30-some-odd years ago, and I’m just getting ready to start my day when Anne calls me from school to chat about dinner.

“Burgers sound fine, hon. I’ll bring some home tonight. What’s with the note?”

“Oh, just some things I thought of. See you later.”

I wash and brush and dress and toddle off downstairs to begin my morning routine. Cup of mint tea and a bite of whatever leftovers I can find in the fridge.

While I’m nuking my tea water I start reading the note she left me.

“Rinse out the garbage cans. Trim back the front........
