It’s amazing the twists and turns that life takes, the roads down which we travel — or don’t travel — that often don’t come into crystal clarity until we look back on them months, years or sometimes decades later.

I started thinking about that the other day when I saw on a journalism industry website a story about Doug Bauer being named publisher of the Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff.

Now, I don’t know Doug Bauer, but I know from the story that he has a 33-year newspaper career going (not bad, Doug, but I’m at 40) and that he started by taking late-night sports calls for a local paper (hey, so did I). He’s held a lot of different positions, and I’m sure will do great things for the Daily Sun (good luck, Doug).

What really grabbed my attention, though, was the name of the paper itself. You see, one time, way back when — before one of those twists in the road — I interviewed at the Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff.

I was newly married and my now ex-wife was a teacher who had the summer off, so for our honeymoon we decided to drive........
