I try to avoid politics on social media and in my columns. After all, I am a positivity coach, and there really aren’t a lot of positive things you can say about either social media or politics.

Social media becomes an echo chamber where the algorithm spits back at us what we want to see. Politics has become more like a sport, where if my team wins, your team loses. It’s like “Yeah us!” and “Boo you!” There is very little cooperation and, quite frankly, this makes it hard to get anything constructive done.

To move society forward we need to find ways to cooperate with each other. In order to do that we at least need to be willing to listen to the other side. It can’t be overstated how important it is to at least listen to others with whom you don’t agree. This listening can, in theory, create understanding, empathy, and, ultimately, more unity in diversity.
