GUEST APPEARANCE: Being worth more never felt so bad
How “old fashioned” am I? Well, I still look forward to the daily mail delivery. The stuff derisively referred to as “snail mail.” I actually enjoy grabbing a handful of envelopes, magazines, and junk mail and sorting through the good, the bad and the irrelevant.
Today’s catch was interesting. A couple of junk pieces. What’s not to appreciate when good people show regular concern for my hearing and for the siding on my house?
The monthly electric bill from RG&E. Nothing pleasant in that envelope, but the numbers were pretty much what I anticipated. Key Bank sent a cordial note about fee restructuring. I doubt that will affect me to any significant extent, but I made a mental note to ask Steve about it next time I stop in at Key.
Then the big one: My house is now worth $67,000 more than I realized. That’s according to the city of Canandaigua’s 2024 Assessment Notification. It’s not every day that one’s net worth increases by $67,000. I suggested to my wife that we go out for dinner. After quickly accepting the offer, she dampened my elation with two questions: “Are we selling?” And “Does that mean our property taxes are going up?”
Come to think of it, she has asked similar questions through something like 10 previous reassessments. The answer to question #1 is always “no.” The answer to question #2 is always “yes.” It may not be a “yes” this year, or even much of a........
