BEYOND THE FENCE: Unexpected surprises — They happen often at DHP

There is something exceptional about new life. For many, it seems no matter the species, encountering new birth deeply resonates. Consider spring and early summer — what with the baby birds, bunnies, fox kits, wild turkey poults, tiny turtles ... even butterflies. All are a delight to encounter.

All these species — and then some — currently can be viewed at Deer Haven Park. Hands down, however, and much anticipated every season is the birthing of the fawns. Whitetail does should be admired for their fortitude as they are physically challenged every winter to sustain a 200-day gestation period during the most food sparse time of year. Upholding their own healthy body weight is challenge enough, let alone having to support a pregnancy. Surviving such will normally bring the birth timing to between the end of May through June.

Fawns will learn to stand within minutes of birth as a survival mechanism, but for roughly the first four weeks of life will be bedded down not far from sight of........
