The very same Democratic Party establishment that for months insisted Joe Biden did somersaults before breakfast and would brook no opposition from skeptics burdened with the evidence of their own eyes is now insisting Vice-President Kamala Harris is the only possible replacement for Biden and is again brooking no opposition. Do you suppose this will end well?

Anyone who watched then-senator Harris’s 2020 presidential campaign fail to make it out of 2019 has to think not. One of the early favourites, she hit 15 per cent in the polls after dramatically accusing Joe Biden of racism in a June debate — yes, the same Joe Biden whose own candidacy was saved by Black voters in South Carolina. By December, however, she was down to three per cent and withdrew. People do evolve, so maybe she’ll succeed in 2024. In just a few months, we’ll know whether she is Biden’s last gift for the Democrats or Biden’s revenge, a poison pill for the “elites” who dumped him.

The president’s withdrawal from the race involved somewhat more kicking and screaming than George Washington’s selfless gift to the new American republic when he declined to run for a third term, thus establishing the norm of two presidential terms. Broken only by Franklin Roosevelt in World War II, the norm was codified in the 22nd amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1951 — though you........
