Tearoom owner takes on historic role in market town

Bungay's new town reeve has been announced as Jason Collins, who becomes the youngest to hold the traditional title for over 20 years.

At the age of 39 he is also the second youngest for nearly three-quarters of a century.

The earliest surviving record of a town reeve in Bungay, William Brooke, appears in the St Mary’s Churchwardens’ Book in 1536.

The town reeve heads the Town Trust, which owns the town lands, the ancient Butter Cross, almshouses and other assets.
