Scottish and UK governments must learn from mistakes of Covid pandemic shambles

The contents of Baroness Hallett's report into the UK Covid Inquiry are damning.

The UK and Scottish governments’ first responsibility is to keep their people safe.

On this count, the administrations in London and Edinburgh failed, and thousands died on their watch.

The world had seen nothing like the pandemic in a century and mistakes were inevitable.

But Baroness Hallett's report shows the country woefully unprepared for the carnage of Covid.

The report concluded that we were prepared for the "wrong pandemic" and the strategy adopted in 2011 was "outdated" and "untested".

The consequences of the lack of readiness was misery and heartache for too many families.
