Braid: Smith scores huge party win with moves that may end up hurting the UCP

RED DEER — Well, that worked.

Premier Danielle Smith appeased and applauded her United Conservative Party for months. On Saturday the members cheered back, handing her gigantic approval rating of 91.5 per cent.

It was a big moment for the premier, but she may ultimately pay a price for spending so much time, energy and money to court party members whose views are well to the right of Alberta’s political centre.

Her strategy sure got the job done in the tight party world. Even staffers who thought she would do well were startled at the support she drew from the 4,633 members who voted.
