Nelson: Public safety's all relative at City Hall

So you think our esteemed city council doesn’t get hot and bothered over public safety?

Think again. Sometimes it’s very cognizant of the danger to life and limb. It just depends on whose safety is in question.

If you work at a downtown business or are unfortunate to live in the vicinity of the supervised drug consumption site at the Sheldon Chumir health facility in the Beltline, you can be forgiven for thinking your particular worries are not a high priority for council.

That’s despite the soaring number of commercial robberies — up 70 per cent in September alone from the long-term average. And it’s the downtown core that’s the worst affected, with convenience stores, liquor outlets and cannabis shops the most popular targets.
