Nelson: City charges ahead into electric bus lottery
There’s an ominous feeling surrounding our city’s latest grandiose plan: replacing its fleet of transit buses with all-electric vehicles.
But why should this send a shiver of concern through Calgarians? After all, not one of these newfangled buses is on our roads.
Maybe it’s because we’ve seen this movie before: A massively expensive transit project combining the lure of “free” money from other levels of government with the sanctified label of environmental purity.
Cast your mind back a decade, and recall those plaudits and promises surrounding the initial “far north to deep south” Green Line LRT announcement. Then fast-forward to the shrunken reality of what that dream has morphed into — a much more costly system despite jettisoning proposed stations faster than politicians ditch election promises. And so far, not a single metre of track laid.
