The Buenos Aires subway line D will reopen on Thursday, Buenos Aires City Mayor Jorge Macri has announced. The line, which runs from the central business district through Palermo to Núñez, had been closed since January 8 for signaling system renovations.

“We’ve sped up the modernization works and managed to reopen the D line ahead of time,” Macri posted on his X account. “It now features a higher security standard and increased service frequency.”

Trains will not stop at Facultad de Medicina until March 10, while renovation work at the station is completed.

In January, the company operating the subway system announced the D line would be down while it upgraded to a more modern signaling system.

“It will improve operations and provide a more efficient service because it communicates between trains, allowing them to get as close as possible in a safe manner, reducing intervals as much as possible and determining their exact location,” Subterráneos de Buenos Aires said in a press release.

The works were initially expected to end on March 17, with the bulk of the works done in January and February, when the D line sees a 40% reduction in passengers, according to the Buenos Aires City government.

In 2023, over 54 million passengers used the D line.
