Trump promises influential roles for Elon Musk and Kennedy in government

In a recent campaign event in Arizona, former President Donald Trump announced that Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent public health advocate, would have significant roles in his administration if he is re-elected in 2024. Trump’s statement, made during an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, highlights his commitment to reshaping government priorities and emphasizes the unique strengths he believes Musk and Kennedy would bring to his administration. Trump’s promises aim to boost efficiency in government spending and address the nation’s health challenges, both areas he contends are currently neglected.

Trump has been vocal about his admiration for Musk, particularly regarding Musk’s ability to manage and innovate within large organizations. During his conversation with Carlson, Trump outlined Musk’s potential role in government, noting that while Musk was uninterested in a conventional cabinet role, he could take charge of a new “government efficiency” commission. According to Trump, Musk would be tasked with spearheading an effort to significantly cut federal spending without impacting essential services. “He thinks he can cut $2 trillion without affecting anybody, and I think he can do it,” Trump remarked. Musk, who has spoken about the importance of reducing wasteful spending, has suggested that his involvement could save taxpayers billions by streamlining federal operations and eliminating redundancies.

The proposed commission, reportedly to be called the “Department of Government Efficiency” (or “DOGE” for short), would focus on trimming what Trump sees as unnecessary expenditures within the federal government. Musk has previously shared his belief that the federal budget could be reduced by at least $2 trillion annually, echoing sentiments popular among fiscal conservatives who argue that the current level of government spending is unsustainable.
