Infiltrators’ grip on West Bengal’s welfare schemes

With the rollout of SIR in West Bengal, alarming discrepancies are surfacing. Hundreds of people are returning to Bangladesh through border routes, and many among them have admitted that they used fake documents for years to avail government welfare schemes. Various investigations and media reports reveal that fraudulent networks were used to obtain benefits such as Lakshmir Bhandar, ration, voter cards and even birth certificates. The BJP has strongly reacted to this.

As SIR begins, cases of “reverse migration” and confessions about fake documents are coming to light, with 150–200 suspected Bangladeshis returning daily through the Hili border. Earlier, BSF would detain 5–6 people a day; now the number has risen to triple digits.

In media interviews, one infiltrating woman admitted:

“We have no genuine documents, so we are leaving.”

A young man confessed:

“I stayed in Kolkata for eight years. If they ask for papers, I can’t show anything.”
