Opinion: Kris Mayes thumps her chest while she retreats

She suggested fellow Arizona Democrat and political rival Gov. Katie Hobbs is still sitting on her butt on groundwater action.

She dropped notebook binders of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 on a table and dared the incoming Republican White House to go ahead and try enacting any of its unconstitutional provisions.

She more broadly threatened the next president of the United States:

“It's my job to uphold both the Arizona and the federal Constitution. And I will do that. I do not believe that in electing Donald Trump, Arizona voters voted to shred the U.S. and Arizona constitutions. And if Donald Trump tries to do that, he will have to go through me first.

That would be Donald Trump who just won Arizona by six points and whose party asserted greater control of the Arizona Legislature, setting back Democrats like Mayes in their dream of painting the state blue.

Still, the attorney general isn’t backing down.
