Opinion: With no gaffes from Gallego, time's up for Lake

In football, there’s a statistic called “time of possession.” Whichever offense controls the ball the longest usually wins the game.

In Wednesday night’s debate between U.S. Senate candidates Ruben Gallego and Kari Lake, the Republican dominated the clock and set the tone. But in politics, that doesn’t guarantee a victory.

Though Lake often interrupted Gallego and ignored time limits, it was done in calm, measured tones. That was the best strategy for the former gubernatorial candidate. She’s down several points heading into the fourth quarter and desperately needs to change the dynamic.

Unfortunately for her, Gallego also was calm and measured, making no major gaffes to fuel last-minute negative ads. All he needed to do was run out the clock, which he achieved.

Supporters of each candidate came away happy, but neither can declare a rout. Still, political consultants need to get paid.
