Opinion: Abortion is legal, despite what you've heard

You might not know it from the ads on television and online, but abortion is currently legal in Arizona.

In fact, physicians are free to treat miscarriages and other late-pregnancy health crises however they and their patients deem best.

Yet, according to the Proposition 139 sales pitch, our state looks like something out of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and the only way out of this dystopia is to change our constitution.

The Arizona Legislature already enacted a clear, commonsense system to handle the controversial issue. It charts a moderate course, avoiding the extremes of partisans on either side.

Current state law allows abortion up to the 15th week of pregnancy, and longer in the case of medical emergencies.

It also offers important safety precautions to protect girls and women from other health complications. A surgical abortion or abortion pill prescription must be provided by a qualified medical doctor.
