What a difference a week makes. Seven days ago, when I spoke to Eluned Morgan she hadn't decided whether to stand or not A few hours later I saw her sat with her team outside Pizza Express in the sunshine of Cardiff Bay, and it didn't take a genius to work out their topic of discussion was.

By Sunday, she had put her name out there, by Monday, she officially entered the race, and by Wednesday, with no-one else's name there, she was named Welsh Labour leader.

What happened over that weekend is still something of a mystery. Other people were not just mulling over bids, but ready to announce. Legwork had been put in, numbers crunched, donors lined up, but then it all changed.

For those not familiar with Labour internal politics, it's a heck of a turnaround. In 2018, the only time Mrs Morgan has stood before, she came third and had to be helped onto the ballot. As it is Labour Senedd group members who pick their favoured candidate, it doesn't take much reading between the lines to see she was not the most popular choice at that time.

Then earlier this year, she gave a very honest summary of why she wouldn't put her name forward against Vaughan Gething and Jeremy Miles when the leadership contest opened once again. She admitted how hard she found the effective popularity contest that is a leadership contest, and that she had other personal commitments, she is a carer for her mother who has Alzheimer's.

She had even been fairly non-committal when asked if she wanted to carry on with the health minister role at all under the new leader.

The scale of the job facing Eluned Morgan should not be........
