Mister Rogers was a monumental part of childhood for many in the Gen X and Millennial generations. And his legacy as a loving and compassionate educator lives on years after his career came to a close.

Fred Rogers’ iconic public television show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood debuted nationally in 1968 (though he started it in the early 1960s). On August 31, 2001, the final episode of Rogers’ beloved show aired.

At the time, Rogers was 73. According to CBS News, he gave “no inkling” that it would be his final show.

“In the end, the 73-year-old Fred Rogers takes off his sneakers and cardigan and, before leaving the living room, promises—just as he has in every episode—that he will be back,” the outlet reported.

But he left his viewers with a profound piece of advice.
