Editorial: No pardons on either side of Jan. 6

President-elect Donald J. Trump was very clear in his Sunday interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” about who he thinks should be in prison for crimes related to the sacking of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021: the members of Congress who investigated the events of that day as well as the chain of events that led up to it.
The president-elect was also clear on who should not be in prison for crimes related to Jan. 6: the rioters who trespassed, vandalized and assaulted police officers in a failed and frenzied attempt to stop the certification of the Electoral College vote.
“Yeah, most likely, I’ll do it very quickly,” Mr. Trump told Kristen Welker of his intention to issue pardons to the rioters.

Ms. Welker noted that 169 of them had pleaded guilty to assaulting police officers and 900 had pleaded guilty to other crimes. Mr. Trump said he’d be reviewing “individual cases” but acting on day one of his administration — a seeming........
