New Delhi: On Sunday (July 19) morning, police forcibly removed protesting villagers from the Barana river and its banks near Kupi village in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhattarpur district.

The villagers, predominantly people from indigenous communities, have been protesting against the Ken-Betwa river interlinking project since July 3, and demanding fair compensation for their lands and homes that they will lose to the project.

They had been protesting by laying on wooden funeral pyres on the banks of the Barana river (a tributary of the river Ken) and wearing loose nooses around their necks. 

In a video published by PTI on July 19, police personnel can be seen rounding up protestors across the Barana river and dispersing them.
