Watch live: Hegseth, Caine brief reporters on Iran after Trump extends pause on strikes
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Dan Caine will speak with reporters Wednesday morning about the U.S. military operation in Iran, after President Trump announced another temporary suspension of strikes on Tehran amid negotiations.
Trump announced the pause in a post on Truth Social less than two hours before the 8 p.m. EDT deadline for Iranian leaders to make a deal and open the Strait of Hormuz.
“The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” Trump wrote, adding that the regime’s latest 10-point proposal is a “workable basis on which to negotiate.”
The president’s extreme rhetoric threatening civilization in Iran faced severe backlash Tuesday ahead of the deadline.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. EDT.
