Live updates: Israel claims it has taken out 2 top Iranian officials; Senate wades into SAVE America Act
Israel’s military said Tuesday that its latest strikes on Tehran have taken out two top Iranian officials, Ali Larijani, the secretary of the country’s Supreme National Security Council, and Gholamreza Soleimani, who commanded Iran’s Basij unit. Larijani is the second-most senior leader to be killed in the conflict since Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s death on Feb. 28.
On Capitol Hill, the Senate will begin its consideration of the SAVE America Act, backed by President Trump, with Majority Leader John Thune under (R-S.D.) pressure to get the bill across the finish line. Trump’s push, however, has put him at odds with some in his own party.
The conflict in Iran has also heightened tensions in Washington, D.C., where lawmakers are engaged in a partisan holy war over religious identity and free speech rights.
Meanwhile, primary elections are underway in Illinois, where voters will weigh in on who will succeed retiring Sen. Dick Dubrin (D-Ill.) and other key House races. Here’s what to look out for as the results come in at 8 p.m. EDT.
It’s St. Patrick’s Day, so Trump will host Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin at the White House and will later attend a Friends of Ireland luncheon at the Capitol and a shamrock bowl presentation.
