Democrat Nathan Sage drops out of Iowa Senate race

Democrat Nathan Sage, the executive director of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, is ending his bid for Senate in Iowa, citing a struggle to keep fundraising competitive.

“After long and thoughtful conversations with my family, my team, and trusted supporters, I’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to end my campaign for the United States Senate,” Sage said in a video message shared to his social media on Sunday.

“As a true grassroots campaign, we simply were unable to raise the financial resources necessary to keep this campaign viable. In today’s political environment, it takes extraordinary sums of money to compete. … Too often, the system favors those with wealth, power, connection and established influence.”

Sage, who was running to fill retiring Sen. Joni Ernst’s (R-Iowa) seat, pledged to continue to champion working-class voices and said “this is not goodbye.”

The military veteran was the first Democrat to enter the race last spring, despite the steep uphill climb for his party in the red state.

The last time Iowa voted for a Democrat in the Senate was in 2008, when Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) won reelection. The last time it voted for a Democratic president was in 2012, and Trump won the state by 13 points in 2024.

Cook Political Report rates the open seat as “likely Republican,” one step short of being solidly in the GOP column.

Iowa state Rep. J.D. Scholten (D) ran for Ernst’s seat before suspending his campaign last summer and endorsing fellow state Rep. Josh Turek (D). State Sen. Zach Wahls (D) is also running on the Democratic side.

Rep. Ashley Hinson (R) is favored to win the June 2 GOP primary, with endorsements from Trump and Ernst.

Walhs outraised Turek and Sage in the last quarter of 2024, the Des Moines Register reported, while Hinson raised more than Wahls and Turek combined.
