Olympian says members of US men’s hockey team will attend Trump State of the Union
Members of the U.S. men’s hockey team will attend President Trump’s State of the Union Address Tuesday at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., fresh off their Olympic victory in Italy.
“Yeah, we’re excited to go. I mean, it’s something you don’t get to do … I don’t know what day it is … every Tuesday. But it’s gonna be special for us,” Quinn Hughes, whose brother Jack scored the game-winning goal in overtime on Sunday to lift the U.S. over Canada and claim the team’s first gold medal in more than four decades, told ABC News.
The men’s planned attendance at Tuesday’s speech comes after the U.S. women’s hockey team, which also won gold over Canada in Milan, declined to come to D.C. for the president’s address “due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments.”
The men’s team has been rocketed to stardom this week thanks to its win on Sunday, with videos of players partying in Miami and expressing their love for the country going viral on social media in recent days.
One of the videos, taken from the team locker room soon after the game, showed FBI director Kash Patel partying with the team and facilitating a phone call from the president.
Patel has faced backlash over his attendance at the celebration, intensifying questions about his use of government resources for personal benefit. The FBI has said “any other personal expenses would be reimbursed” by Patel.
Many right-wing pundits and conservative politicians have drawn a contrast between members of the U.S. men’s hockey team speaking supportively about the president and other U.S. athletes who sparked anger from the right for expressing hesitation representing the country under Trump.
The president has said Tuesday’s address will be “long,” as his remarks are expected to cover a wide array of topics from trade to immigration and affordability.
