Did 41 Years of Therapy Actually Help Me?
Seeking therapy isn't weakness. It can be a determined search for answers and healing.
Therapy maintained mental stability and enabled hard life choices, not dependency.
Long-term therapy can shift from crisis survival to wellness maintenance over time.
It started when I was young. Pretty young, anyway—18 years old. I didn’t know it would continue until I was well into my 50s; 59, to be exact. But I have cut down. I don’t do it weekly anymore, or biweekly or even monthly.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Sometimes it’s necessary, right? It’s a coping mechanism. There’s a time and place for everything.
Over the past 41 years I have seen:
Three registered clinical counsellors.
One campus counsellor.
One sex therapist (yes, really).
That's 14 in total. Two more and I get a free appointment.
