In P.E.I.’s 2021 Water Act, in the 2022 irrigation strategy, and in a 2024 standing committee recommendation, our provincial government has repeatedly stated the need for a more participatory approach to overseeing water policy and governance. Despite the real need for a dedicated water governance body, our government decided that the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) might be able to fill this water governance role.

Members of the Coalition for the Protection of P.E.I. Water were recently invited to work with the government and develop new terms of reference for the EAC. The coalition developed terms of reference that would satisfy the goals of the act, the irrigation strategy, and the standing committee recommendation.
