As Canada’s population ages, the incidence of dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease is on the rise. There are currently more than 450,000 Canadians living with dementia. These numbers will double by 2030, and further increase to 1.7 million by 2050, according to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
As a cognitive neurologist and researcher in the Bruyère Memory Program at Bruyère Health in Ottawa, I see first-hand that the impact of Alzheimer’s disease is more than just numbers. Families struggling with an Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis will tell you it’s an insidious disease, and that they want more time before it inevitably robs what’s left of the person they love.
