Will the council be increasing car parking charges this year?

Norwich City Council is reviewing its car parking charges but is yet to confirm whether it will cost more to park at its 13 off-street car parks.

A spokeswoman said the details of car parking charges were still being finalised and any confirmed updates will be shared as soon as they are available.

It comes as Norfolk Parking Partnership, which is made up of councillors from authorities across the county, will be increasing charges for short-stay parking in on-street bays across 35 Norwich streets .

The partnership agreed in 2022 that short-stay on-street parking charges in the city would automatically increase each year.

This year, the increase will come in on April 20.

Those in Band A will go up to £2.40 for up to 30 minutes, from £2.30 for up to 30 minutes.

The charge for each additional 15 minutes will also increase, to 95p from 90p.

In Band B, charges will increase to £1.80 for up to 30 minutes from £1.70 for that period of stay.

The cost of each additional 15 minute stay will rise to 65p from 60p.

The last time City Hall increased the cost to use its car parks was a year ago.

It said the additional £300,000 would be used on frontline services.

Councillor Emma Hampton, cabinet member for a climate responsive Norwich, said at the time: "Increasing fees for our services is always a last resort.

"With funding from central government dwindling, and the cost of things like energy and materials going up due to inflation, we are under financial pressure to do more with less – like all local councils up and down the country."
