China presses ahead with Brahmaputra mega dam despite fresh concerns
The decision comes shortly after a devastating glacial collapse and flood disaster along the Nepal-China border, which has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the Himalayan region to sudden geological and climate-related events.
New Delhi: China is pressing ahead with its ambitious mega dam project on the Yarlung Zangbo river in Tibet, despite renewed concerns over the geological and environmental risks of building such a massive structure in one of the world’s most seismically active regions.
The Yarlung Zangbo becomes the Siang after entering India through Arunachal Pradesh and later the Brahmaputra in Assam. The project, described in China as the Yarlung Zangbo Lower Reaches Hydropower Project, is part of Beijing’s renewable-energy plans for 2026-2030.
